Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha en Calvin Vlaanderen zesde in het wereldkampioenschap MXGP
Het Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team reisde naar Matterley Basin in Engeland voor de laatste wedstrijd van het wereldkampioenschap MXGP. Matterley Basin is één van de mooiste banen op de kalender.
Het was voor Vlaanderen zijn laatste wedstrijd voor het Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team en daarom was hij zeer gemotiveerd om het goed te doen. Het hele weekend waren zijn snelheid en rondetijden goed.
Nadat Vlaanderen op zaterdag zesde werd in de kwalificatieheat, verzekerde hij zich van een goede startplaats voor in de manches.
In de eerste manche kwam hij op een achtste plaats uit de start en ondanks dat hij niet lekker in zijn ritme zat, wist hij toch de rijder voor hem te passeren en werd zevende. In de tweede manche kwam hij op een achtste plaats uit de eerste ronde en ditmaal kon hij agressiever te werk gaan. Hij slaagde erin om een aantal inhaalmanoeuvres te forceren en kwam op een goede zesde plaats over de finish.
Het team en Vlaanderen hebben het kampioenschap afgesloten op een goede zesde plaats in de eindstand van het wereldkampioenschap. Vlaanderen zal zich nu gaan voorbereiden op de MX of Nations in Ernee, Frankrijk waar hij samen met Kay de Wolf en Glenn Coldenhoff het Nederlandse team vormt.
Commentaar Calvin Vlaanderen (6e in het dagklassement): ‘’Ik was in staat om het seizoen met een goed resultaat af te sluiten. Uiteraard was mijn doel om iets verder naar voren te zitten maar met matige starts is dit bijna onmogelijk. Op zaterdag begon ik goed met een fijn gevoel op de baan in beide trainingen. Ik werkte een goede kwalificatieheat af waarin ik zesde wist te worden. In de eerste manche op zondag had ik het moeilijk. Ik vond geen manier om in te halen en had niet het ritme waarop ik hoopte. In de tweede manche voelde ik me beter en slaagde ik erin om de rijders voor mij te passeren en zesde te worden. Ik ben in het kampioenschap op een zesde plaats geëindigd. Het was een heel goed, constant jaar waar ik erg trots op ben. De eerste prive-rijder en team voor het tweede jaar oprij. Soms vergeet je bijna dat je iedere week met de fabrieksteams in gevecht zit.’’

The Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha travelled to the UK for the MXGP World Championship finale at the beautiful track of Matterley Basin – one of the best circuits on the calendar.
It what was Vlaanderen’s final MXGP race with the team he was super motivated to end the season on a high and all weekend long the speed and lap times were good.
After bringing home a solid sixth in the qualifying race, Vlaanderen had a good gate selection for race day and good starts are always paramount in MXGP.
In the first moto, Vlaanderen started in eighth and despite not riding with his usual flow was still able to push forward to finish in seventh. In the final MXGP moto of the year, Vlaanderen was again in eighth spot after the first official lap but was riding with more urgency than the opening moto and was able to make a couple of passes to finish sixth.
The team ended the season with a very impressive sixth overall in the championship standings as Vlaanderen had another great season with the team.
Vlaanderen will now prepare for the MXoN where he’ll represent the Netherlands at Ernee, France.
Calvin Vlaanderen (6th overall): I was able to end the MXGP season with a solid result. Of course my goal was to be a bit closer to the front and in the fight but with bad starts it’s almost impossible. On Saturday, I started off well with a good feeling in both practices and a solid race to finish in sixth. Sunday I struggled in race one, I just couldn’t find a way to pass and didn’t have the flow like I wanted. In the second race I felt better and could fight my way pass the riders in front to finish in sixth. I ended up sixth overall in the championship. It was a very solid consistent season and I’m proud of it. The first privateer rider and team again for the second year in a row. Sometimes you would forget that after fighting with the factory teams each week.
